KRALENDIJK, BONAIRE (BosNewsLife)– International Christian broadcaster Trans World Radio (TWR) was struggling Sunday, May 13, to prevent flooding at one of its main transmitter sites on the island of Bonaire.
“With the recent real estate development on the island…the resulting run-off of rain water is threatening and, at times, even flooding the transmitter site and antenna field,” said TWR President Lauren Libby in a statement to BosNewsLife.
He said during the 2010 rainy season, “flood waters rose to within four vertical inches of entering” TWR’s transmitter room. “This additional water [of
real estate development] makes it nearly impossible for TWR’s pumps to keep water away from the transmitter site,” Libby warned.
He said TWR is raising funds as experts claim “that building a large dyke, at a cost of $76,000, is the most cost-effective way to solve this problem.”
NEW DISASTER?
Libby added there “has been one near-disaster of flooding on the island already” and that his organization urges Christians to “act now to prevent damage to our equipment and disruption to the ministry going out from Bonaire.”
TWR has been broadcasting what it calls “the life-changing message of the gospel” for nearly half a century to millions of listeners in the Caribbean and
Latin America from the island. “We hear daily from those for whom TWR is their daily spiritual food,” Libby explained.
Additionally, TWR has also been a source of information for reportedly persecuted Christians in several parts of the world.
TWR says it speaks “fluently in more than 200 languages and dialects” and claims to “engage millions in more than 160 countries with Biblical truth.”
