expressed concern over the escalating nuclear crisis with Iran.

He spoke as an estimated 100,000 pilgrims gathered at Saint Peter Square Sunday, April 16, to hear the pontiff celebrate his first Easter Mass, which happened to be on his 79th birthday.

On Christianity’s most joyous day, when the Bible says Jesus Christ rose from the death following His crucifixion, Pope Benedict XVI also prayed for an end to violence in Iraq, where Christians are often in the crossfire as well.

Thousands of Christians have fled Iraq fearing attacks by Muslim militants against them.  "May peace prevail over the tragic violence that continues mercilessly to claim victims," he said in his Urbi et Orbi message – Latin for "to the city and to the world," as he stood on the balcony of Saint Peter’s Basilica.

The Pope also called for a global cooperation to combat terrorism and prayed that "those caught up in the conflict in the Holy Land may find peace." He urged a patient and persevering dialogue to remove ancient and new obstacles.

RE-AFFIRMING ISRAEL

He stressed the international community, which re-affirms Israel’s right to exist in peace, should assist the Palestinian people to overcome their difficulties and establish their own state. Israel made clear however it will not negotiate with the Palestinian government as long as it includes the militant group Hamas.

He also expressed concerns over Iran, another country where human rights watchers say Christians are persecuted. The pontiff did not address the issue of persecution, but made clear there were fears Iran might be working toward building a nuclear arsenal and he urged for a peaceful solution.

"Concerning the international crises linked to nuclear power, may an honorable solution be found for all parties, through serious and honest negotiations," Benedict XVI stressed without naming the country, although observers said he clearly meant Iran.

DARFUR SUFFERING

In addition, the Pope spoke of Africa, and mentioned especially the people of Darfur, who are reportedly living in a very difficult humanitarian situation. He said the situation was no longer sustainable and said many people living in the regions around Africa’s Great Lake, have still to heal the wounds of history.

But as Christ gave forgiveness, it was important, he said,  to see that people in the continent aspire to reconciliation, justice and progress.  Pope Benedict XVI had earlier appeared dressed in gold colored vestments while celebrating mass at the altar on the steps of the basilica watched by millions around the world on television.

Easter mass is celebrated in front of the icon of the Most Holy Savior, an ancient image of the face of Christ, known as the "Acheropita" which the Vatican claims was "not painted by human hands". After the pope’s initial greeting, two deacons opened the doors and displayed the icon to all those present. Pope Benedict XVI gave his blessing and Easter wishes in 62 different languages. "May the Grace and Joy of the Risen Christ be with you all," the Pope prayed. (With BosNewsLife Research and reports from Vatican City).
