Micah Challenge said the United Nations ‘Millennium Development Goals’ set in 2000 by world leaders to reduce poverty should be respected. Millions of often persecuted Christians are among people living in poverty from India to Africa, rights group say.
"Last month, during Prime Minister’s Question Time, Tony Blair gave his "complete support" to the aims of Micah Challenge to ensure that world leaders keep their promises," the group told BosNewsLife in a statement.
Despite reports of tensions between Blair and Brown over policies, Micah Challenge said the incoming prime minister was "instrumental" in getting Group of Eight most industrialized nations "to agree to a relief package" in 2005.
FREE UNIVERSAL EDUCATION
"He has also made free universal education one of the two main pillars of his Labor Party’s foreign policy. The other is climate change," the group added. It reminded Brown that he promised parliament last month that the United Kingdom would continue to "press the international community" to raise development aid.
“I know that this is an issue that’s close to Gordon’s heart and I would quote back to him his own words on tackling world poverty, that gave us so much encouragement," said Andy Clasper, Micah Challenge Executive Director.
“I and the members of Micah Challenge coalition and countless others like us are ready, Gordon,” to fight poverty, he added
Micah Challenge is named after the Bible’s Old Testament prophet Micah. The challenge is based on the Bible Text: "What does the Lord require of you? To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God…." (With BosNewsLife Research).
