Five consecutive rocket attacks in the sensitive military zone of the Nowshehra Military Base of the province rocked the area on Wednesday July 9, and  in a separate incident at least seven (07) people were killed and 12 critically injured in three landmines blasts in various parts of the Lower Kurram
area, officials said.

It came after pro-Taliban militants ended their siege around the police station in Hangu district late Thursday, July 10, the NWFP police said in a statement obtained by BosNewsLife. “The Taliban ended the siege of the police station when troops started arriving.”

An intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity said detainees were linked to tribal warlords Baitullah Mehsud, who has been accused of plotting the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who also was leding the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Mehsud has denied the charges.

Separately the government reportedly signed a truce agreement with the militants in Khyber tribal district late this week after what officials described as “a 10 day paramilitary operation in the area.” Minority Christians have expressed concerns about growing Islamic extremism in the area, amid reports of killings and kidnappings.
