flames, forcing a massive evacuation, security officials said. There were reportedly several injuries following the suspected terror strike, which came a day after London police discovered two car bombs, possibly placed by al-Qaida or other terrorist networks.
British commercial Sky News television quoted witnesses as saying they heard several "loud bangs", suggesting a car bomb or other explosive device may have been involved in the iincidents.
It was believed that a Cherokee 4×4 jeep smashed through security barriers at the airport, the busiest in Scotland.
"The car came speeding past at about 30 miles per hour (50 kilometers). It was approaching the building quickly," The Associated Press (AP) news agency quoted Scott Leeson, who was nearby at the time, as saying. "Then the driver swerved the car around so he could ram straight in to the door. He must have been trying to smash straight through," Leeson said.
ON FIRE
Two men had been in the Cherokee jeep and one of their clothes caught fire, witnesses said. Holidaymaker Stephen Clarkson told Sky News he knocked one of the men to the floor before police intervened. "There was an Asian male. He was lying on the floor and he was on fire, the Jeep was on fire as well."
The blaze was soon under control, police officials said. However thee was initially chaos at the scene. "The fellow got up and started fighting with police. I managed to knock the Asian fellow to the ground and four police officers got on top of him," Clarkson said.
People also started to panick. "People were running past like they had missed their flight," witness James Edgar told Sky News at Glasgow Airport. "They told us all to get out of the airport. Everyone was in a panic and police and security were scuffling with an Asian gentleman," Edgar added
Security officials have warned previously of dozens of terror attacks being prepared against the United Kingdom. In a statement, the British government said Prime Minister Gordon Brown was "being kept aware" of the incident.
The official security alert level reportedly remained at "severe", as it has been for some time. Saturday’s apparent attack came exactly one week before the second anniversary of the July 7 bombings that killed 52 people in London. All fights were cancelled, and authorities launched a massive investigation into the latest apparent terrorist attack.
Churches and other Christian groups have been closely monitoring developments. Many organized prayer groups and several churches provided counceling and aid to victims during the terror attack two years ago, BosNewsLife monitored. (With reporting from London, Stefan J.
