proclaim Jesus Christ honorary ‘King of Poland’, 17 years after the country dumped communism when atheism was preached and religion discouraged.

Conservative parliamentarians from the ruling Law and Justice party and League of Polish Families as well as the opposition Peasants Party drawn up this week’s resolution naming Jesus Christ the King of their mainly Catholic nation.

So far only 46 members in the 460-seat parliament back the proposal, well short of the 231 votes to pass, said Szymon Ruman, spokesperson for parliamentary speaker Marek Jurek. However Ruman suggested there was still time as the resolution was likely to be voted on after January 1. The authors of the declaration have reportedly justified their action saying that "Poland’s deep spirituality may be able to rescue Europe from drowning in a lack of faith and morality."

MOVE CRITICIZED

Some Polish church leaders criticized the move as unnecessary.  "Christ doesn’t need a parliamentary resolution to be the king of our hearts," said Monsignor Tadeusz Pieronek, a member of Poland’s episcopate and rector at Krakow’s Papal Academy of Theology.

"These lawmakers would do better to look after their constitutional prerogatives and let religious institutions and the Church do our work," he added. Evangelical leaders and scholars say the Bible makes clear that Jesus Christ’s Kingdom will come after His return, not just for Poland but the whole earth. At the moment His Kingdom is not yet visible here, although the Bible has already declared Jesus Christ the ‘King’ of kings and ‘Lord’ of lords among other titles, experts point out.

Catholic bishops described Poland’s proposed resolution as marking "an overuse of religion for political" goals. "Let parliament deal with passing better laws that we need," Gdansk Archbishop Tadeusz Goclowski added, while Bishop Tadeusz Pieronk reportedly said that such an action "although it may stem from goodwill, sounds like a bit of propaganda".

If the resolution in Poland becomes law, Jesus Christ will follow the path of the ‘Virgin Mary’, who was declared honorary queen of Poland by King John Casimir 350 years ago. That legislation has so far not been criticized by the Catholic Church.

  1. Priest Pieronek doesn’t matter in this fact. It’s fact, during this ceremony of proclaming symbolically Jesus Christ as King of Poland was present President Duda, but also representative for the Polish Catholic Church Bishops and other priests. Pieronek alone is cited again and again, he is lefty, no real Catholic treat him seriously – me and my family not. So I am proud cause in some sense Poland is again Monarchy and once being Polish Kingdom Commonwealth has been very powerful, rich and full of citizen’s freedom – many immigrated from the western Europe, even hundreds or thousands of Scotts during Golden Age of Poland XIV-XVII year. It was the time when Poland several times saved Europe e.g. 1683 (Vienna), but later too – 1920 and in 1939 (betrayed by England and France). It’s only to explain this fact and person od Pieronek 🙂 Regards
