TEHRAN, IRAN (BosNewsLife)– American-Iranian journalist Roxana Saberi who reported for Vatican Radio and other international media has been jailed for eight years on charges of spying for the United States her lawyer said Saturday, April 18.
The 31-year-old dual American-Iranian citizen, who had been working in Iran for several news outlets, was arrested in late January for working in the country without valid press credentials.
But earlier this month, Iranian authorities announced espionage charges against her, saying Saberi used journalism as a cover to pass classified information to U.S. intelligence services.
The United States has rejected the espionage charges as “baseless.”
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a statement that she was “deeply disappointed” by the conviction, which could have carried the death penalty.
